Development Director – People’s Grocery
People’s Grocery is a community-based organization in West Oakland that develops creative solutions to the health problems in our community that stem from a lack of access to and knowledge about healthy, fresh foods. Our mission is to build a local food system that improves the health and economy of the West Oakland community.
Position Summary:
People’s Grocery seeks a Development Director to lead grant and donor fundraising for a $600,000 budget and lead a team of 2-3 staff and interns, working closely with the Executive Director. This is a full-time senior staff position and reports directly to People’s Grocery Executive Director. Position open until filled and starts immediately.
Responsibilities:
OVERSEE ALL FUNDRAISING EFFORTS FOR PEOPLE’S GROCERY
Create and implement the organizational fundraising plan and supervise support staff to carry out their functions related to the plan. Work closely with Executive Director to cultivate relationships with funders and donors.
- GRANTS
- Develop strategy with ED and Fund Development Committee of the Board
- Research and cultivate grant giving prospects
- Write and Develop Proposals and collateral materials
- Develop and maintain tracking, reporting, and evaluation systems
- INDIVIDUAL DONORS:
- Develop an individual donor fundraising strategy including an annual calendar of activities related to an individual donor management program.
- Develop and coordinate grassroots fundraising campaigns and oversee special events.
- Motivate staff, board and volunteers to actively participate in fundraising.
- Cultivate funder and donor relationships, including preparing regular funder updates.
- Oversee all special events for donor cultivation
- EARNED INCOME
- Participate with Program staff in the planning of all earned income streams
- Integrate earned income programs with other fundraising strategies
- SYSTEMS: Manage development systems, including tracking foundation deadlines and grant requirements. Oversee functionality of database and communications systems.
- SUPERVISION: Supervise the volunteers, interns, and other support staff in carrying out their development related tasks
OVERSEE FUNDRAISING ADMINISTRATION
Responsible for ensuring that organizational operations function efficiently and that fundraising and financial systems are integrated smoothly. Works closely with the Office Manager and other support staff in the following areas:
- Lead coordination of grant budgets and grant reporting including budget reports.
- Work with finance department on coordinating budget development and finance reporting.
- Oversee database administration, upkeep, and necessary development to keep pace with fundraising.
- Support the Executive Director in planning, budgeting and coordination of organizational fund development.
- Participate in the Fund Development Committee of the Board of Directors and help with Board fund development where necessary.
Required Experience and Qualifications
- At least 5 years experience with fundraising and a track record of success.
- At least 3 years at a management level in fund development.
- Experience and enthusiasm for grassroots / individual fundraising.
- Superb written and oral communication skills. Excellent editing skills.
- Strong computer skills, particularly MS Word, MS Excel, email, and web.
- Demonstrated commitment to economic and social justice.
Most qualified candidates will also have additional experience
- Knowledge of nonprofit finance.
- Experience supervising and developing staff.
- Experience with special events and/or donor development.
- Familiarity with campaign communications, including media, newsletters, and email blasts.
- Familiarity with fundraising databases.

Pesticide use is more widespread than any of us would like to think. Pesticides are used not just
in agriculture but in our schools, parks, and forests. They are known to cause a wide variety of
health problems in children, farmers, farm workers, and the general public- from cancer, sterility
to birth defects and asthma. Low income and communities of color are especially hard hit by
pesticide misuse and food injustice.The Pesticide Watch Education Fund (PWEF) is a cutting-edge, grassroots, non-profit
organization dedicated to community organizing and leadership development strategies to turn
this toxic tide. We work side-by-side with communities to prevent pesticide exposure, promote
local farming and build healthier communities. We provide organizing and strategy assistance to
local groups and individuals; serve as a clearinghouse for information on the hazards of
pesticides and on their non-toxic alternatives; connect communities with technical experts and
local groups in other communities that are working on similar issues. Our sister organization,

California’s Central Valley is one of the most important agricultural regions in the nation, and an
area of intense pesticide use. Our Central Valley Community Organizer, focused in the northern
San Joaquin and Sacramento Valleys, is responsible for continuing to build a community-based
movement in the Central Valley counties to protect public health from dangerous pesticides and
to promote safer alternatives. The organizer will report to the State Director in Sacramento.
Primary responsibilities include:* Community Organizing. Work with 2-5 of existing community-based groups in the Sacramento
Valley, as well as 5-10 individuals and others interested in starting new community groups to
tackle pesticide use, especially throughout the northern San Joaquin Valley. Help these groups
plan and execute winning campaigns. Train community members in volunteer recruitment,
leadership development, working with the media, coalition building, campaign planning, and other
organizing skills. Work with local groups to research and develop policies and materials
necessary for local efforts. Work with sustainable agriculture groups and other experts to develop
new strategies for communities to make a difference on pesticide issues locally.* Outreach/Public Education. Build relationships with local media and serve as a pesticide expert
on related stories. Give presentations on pesticides and alternatives to community organizations
throughout the Central Valley. Develop fact sheets and reports related to pesticide and healthy
food issues.* Fundraising. Work with the State Director to develop and implement a Central Valley fundraising

Communications Manager
Roots of Change (ROC) is a non-profit organization working to create a sustainable food system in California by the year 2030. Description of Position
The primary focus of the Communications Manager is to rapidly increase the number of Californians who are in ROC’s network of “Concerned Citizens” and provide them with information that motivates them to act to create change. These actions can include sustainable food choices, political pressure, financial support, volunteering, and attending events. A key focus will be showcasing the engagement opportunities offered by other organizations working for sustainable food. The Communications Manager will use a variety of online channels including email, ROC’s website, online campaigns, Facebook and Twitter. Other channels include media relations and printed materials. The Communications Manager reports to the Director of Operations and supports the work of ROC’s other staff as needed.
Key Responsibilities:
- Create and manage a long-term plan for communications and update the plan each quarter.
- Research, create, and manage creation of content for email, web, Facebook, and Twitter, and manage the regular delivery of messages.
- Conduct research and provide analysis of online activity. Create a dashboard of key online metrics and generate weekly and quarterly reports.
- Conduct regular editorial review meetings and coordinate with other staff to maximize the effectiveness of all of ROC’s external communication.
- Manage online campaigns (including Food Declaration) and related cross promotion with other organizations.
- Manage and segment email database of the “Concerned Citizens.”
- Set up and manage systems that encourage people to contribute information and connect with each other.
- Manage the structure of the database for board members and other core connections and create templates for emails to these groups.
- Manage communications with press and bloggers, and research and record coverage.
- Manage the development of print materials.
- Occasionally represent ROC at public events.
Other responsibilities will be added depending on the evolving requirements of the position.
Qualifications:
